Violence against women and girls remains an urgent collective crisis of our time – Message from the CEO on the 16 Days of Activism.

As the “men-in-crisis” narrative grows increasingly prominent in the public and media discourse, we at Child Relief and Support Organization urge that this focus does not eclipse the ongoing crisis of violence against women and girls; and call for a unified and transformative agenda for gender justice.

Today, on International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls which marks the beginning of 16 Days of Activism to End Gender Based Violence, we recall that patriarchal violence is rooted in systemic gender and power inequalities and rigid, stereotypical notions of manhood.

This year’s 16 Days of Activism comes at a moment of heightened public attention around “men and masculinities”. In this context, we call for recognition of and commitment to a common agenda in which efforts to improve men’s well-being are explicitly aligned with and framed through a gender justice approach.

Recognizing and acting on this is an indispensable foundation for positive change for all people.

As a rights based organization, we urge policymakers to urgently step up to support gender-transformative efforts to dismantle rigid and stereotypical gender norms and patriarchal power inequalities at the roots of all forms of gender based violence.

We call on media professionals to go beyond the “men-in-crisis” narrative, and tell the whole story of a society that urgently needs to address the root causes of inequalities and gender based violence.

And we call upon all men andboys to step up to tackle the root causes of gender inequalities, and to dismantle structures that continue to make our societies unfair and unequal.

In doing so, we can pave the way for a society that can tell a different story; one in which women, girls and people of all genders live free from violence, and where men are no longer seen as in crisis.

About Child Relief and Support Organization

We are Child Relief and Support Organization; we work with children, youth and women in South Sudan to help create a society where we are all equal.

To do this, we tackle the root causes of the challenges and inequalities that children, youth and women face. We’re there for children from birth until adulthood and we enable children to prepare for and respond to crises and adversity.

Our purpose

We strive for a just society that advances children’s rights and equality for girls.

We engage people and partners to:

  1. Empower children, young people and communities to make vital changes that tackle the root causes of discrimination against girls, exclusion and vulnerability.
  2. Drive change in practice and policy at local and national levels through our reach, experience and knowledge of the realities children face.
  3. Work with children and communities to prepare for and respond to crises and to overcome adversity.
  4. Support the safe and successful progression of children from birth to adulthood.

How We Work

  • We work with children, young people and women to help create a society where we are all equal.
  • We aim not only to improve the daily lives of girls but also to advance their position and value in society, whilst actively working with boys and young men to champion gender equality.
  • We believe in advancing children’s rights in all contexts, including during conflict and emergencies, where girls are faced with additional dangers.
  • Our programmes deliver lasting change against discriminatory norms, policies and laws. We listen to the voices of children in the community, especially girls whose views and needs are frequently overlooked, to ensure that our work is relevant and effective.
  • We work to strengthen the capacities of local authorities and encourage them to meet their obligations towards child protection and fulfilling children’s rights. We form effective partnerships to address the systemic and structural causes of child rights violations and inequality
  • We embolden young people to become active drivers of change by educating them on their rights and supporting their activism.
  • We give decision-making power to colleagues, partners and programme participants in the areas where we implement programmes. This enables them to make choices that ensure our programmes are effective and sustainable.

Our Programmes

We have grown from being child-centred and community-focused to recognising that we must also impact young people over 18 years of age, work at multiple levels and be active across humanitarian and development contexts. We know that we must partner with and influence a wide range of players to catalyse sustainable, transformative change at scale, from subnational to national levels

Our way of working is well implemented across a range of projects and programmes. Some projects and programmes we have developed and operate in our own right, while others have been established and are being operated in collaboration with our partners.

Child Protection

Violence against children is a critical concern for the most vulnerable girls and boys everywhere that Child Relief and Support Organization works. Children who experience violence are often left with long-lasting negative social, emotional, mental, physical and spiritual consequences.

Over 1 million children suffer violence every year costing South Sudan millions of USD, far more than the cost of preventing violence. Child marriage, child labour, and corporal punishment still affect children on a daily basis. Children with disabilities also suffer disproportionately, and are more likely to be neglected or physically, emotionally, and sexually abused. Emergencies and conflict situations exacerbate or create new child protection concerns.

At Child Relief and Support Organization, we focus on preventing violence against children from happening in the first place, responding to violence when it does occur, and restoring children who have been affected to a state of physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being.

We use a systems approach to address root causes of violence against girls and boys, by empowering key actors to work together to strengthen a protective environment that cares for and supports all children, especially the most vulnerable girls and boys.

Water, Sanitation & Health

Imagine life without it! Unfortunately, it’s a reality for 1 of every 10 people in South Sudan, including the more than 233 children under 5 who die every day from diarrhea caused by contaminated water, poor sanitation, and unsafe hygiene practices.

And it’s a reality for the millions of women and kids who walk an average of 6 kilometers every day to get water, keeping them away from school and work and robbing them of a fulfilling life.

Thanks to partners like ChildFund Korea. We have an ambitious but achievable plan to help end the water and sanitation crisis within our rural communities with your support.

Inclusive Quality Education

We stand with children especially girls so they can get the best possible education.

From early learning to secondary education, we support every part of a child’s journey — not just one piece of it. We work alongside children, their families, communities and the government to ensure they can have a quality education, stay safe and shape their own futures.

Because when girls lead, communities rise — and a future where we are all equal becomes possible.

Protection from Violence

We stand with children to tear down barriers, save lives and build a world where equality for children leads to progress for all.

Violence at home, in schools, online and in public spaces continues to limit children’s freedom, choices and futures. With millions of children displaced by conflict and crisis, the risks are growing. We work with children, young people and communities to prevent harm and create safer environments. Together, we challenge the root causes of inequality and build lasting solutions that help children to live free from violence.

Sexual Reproductive Health Rights

Adolescents deserve the freedom to make decisions about their bodies and futures — but too often, that is denied.

Harmful practices like child marriage and female genital mutilation continue to limit girls’ choices and opportunities. Gender inequality and discrimination mean many are still unable to decide if, when or whom to marry — or access the care they need.

We expand access to youth-friendly health services and end harmful practices. We support adolescents to protect their health, build confidence and take charge of their futures.

Productive & Resilient Livelihoods

In South Sudan, the impact of extreme poverty on children’s development is devastating. Approximately 94% of children (around 6 million out of 6.5 million) live in multidimensional poverty, a rate that is the highest in Africa. This alarming statistic, reported by the African Child Forum in 2023, highlights the severe deprivations children face, including a lack of basic necessities like water, electricity, and adequate housing, along with experiencing food insecurity and acute hunger

Child poverty has long-term implications for their overall well-being. These include poor psychosocial and physical health, malnutrition, lack of education, social exclusion, and limited future employment opportunities. Children may be exposed to more violence, such as child labour and child marriage, as families and caregivers face economic difficulties. This is due to increased stress and pressure to make ends meet

In alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), Child Relief and Support Organization strives to end poverty in all its forms by 2040 to help the most vulnerable children in South Sudan to reach their full potential. We do this by:

  • Graduating the most vulnerable families out of extreme poverty so that very poor families become economically self-reliant and have the dignity and means to provide for their own children.
  • Strengthening food production and increasing resilience and access to markets and financial services so that farmers can increase production of more sustainable and more nutritious food for household consumption and income-earning purposes.
  • Promoting sustainable employment opportunities and market systems so that communities have access to goods, services and employment opportunities through private sector partnerships.
  • Promoting women's economic empowerment so that through economic advancement, women have access to opportunities, services, resources; and through agency, women gain improved decision-making in households and economic activities, and can manage their paid and unpaid workloads, resulting in improved wellbeing. Child Relief and Support Organization also promotes equitable systems through which women can benefit from equitable policies, laws, institutional practices, and social norms.

Health

Despite decades of progress, the most vulnerable children in South Sudan continue to face the same devastating health challenges. Nearly half of all under-five deaths occur during the newborn period, and preventable diseases like pneumonia, diarrhoea, and malaria still claim far too many young lives. These three illnesses alone account for almost half of all under-five mortality. Children who have not received routine vaccinations – known as zero-dose children – make up nearly half of all vaccine-preventable deaths.

At Child Relief and Support Organization, we confront these challenges head-on. Our health interventions target the leading causes of illness and death among children under five. Using family and community-centred approaches, we drive positive behaviour change, strengthen community and health systems, and advocate at all levels to break the cycle of vulnerability.

Our work supports Sustainable Development Goal 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages. By partnering with families, communities, and organisations, we address urgent health needs while contributing to long-term solutions like universal health coverage and improved well-being for all. Over the next five years, we will build on our strengths in nutrition, infectious diseases, mental health, and primary health care systems support to meet prioritised needs of the most vulnerable children in South Sudan
